A funeral service for William Lee Thompson, 83 of Newark will be held Saturday December 22, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Second Presbyterian, Church 42 E. Church Street, with Rev. Oluf Kongshaug officiating. Burial will be in Newark Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Mr. Thompson died Tuesday December 18, 2007 at his residence. He was born September 29, 1924 in Newark to the late Charles Ray and Leona (Gilmore) Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a member of Second Presbyterian Church for 71 years. He retired in 1987 from Continental Can. He was a 1942 graduate of Newark High School. A 50 year member of Acme Lodge #554 F&AM, Past Monarch of the Teheran Grotto, a member of the Post 85 American Legion and VFW Post # 1060, a member of BPOE # 391. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Bill was a good friend to many and loved and remembered by his grandchildren as PaPa Bill. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn J. (Harris) Thompson, whom he married April 20, 1946; daughter, Trudie (Mike) Gummer of Newark; sons, William Thompson of Newark and Michael Thompson of Florida; sister, Catherine Petrey; brothers, Robert (Bonnie) Thompson, James H. Thompson, John (Leona) Thompson all of Newark; grandchildren, Will (Jennifer) Thompson of Lewis Center, Michelle (Phil) Giannaris of Atlanta, GA., Cara Lee Thompson of Boston, MA., Tamara Thompson, Megan Gummer, Erinn Gummer all of Newark; great-grandchildren, Ian, Cameron, Nathan and Aden Thompson; mother-in-law, Evelyn Harris of Newark; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Russ) McGinnis of FL., Helen Bickle, Peggy Miller and Phyllis Thompson all of Newark; special niece, Debra Faught and many other nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William Harris; brothers-in-law, William Harris, Jr., Kenneth Bickle and Raymond Petrey. Calling hours will be observed 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday December 21, 2007 at the Vensil Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street, Newark, and Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.
