FRAZEYSBURG ? Virgil W. Prior, 83, of Nashport, Ohio died Sunday morning, April 6, 2008 at Autumn Health Care Center in Zanesville, Ohio. Born May 17, 1924 in Zanesville, he was the son of the late John and Birdie (Walsh) Prior and was a 1942 graduate of Nashport High School. Mr. Prior was an Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Nashport-Irville United Methodist Church and was formerly Sunday School Superintendant, Sunday School teacher and in charge of the Youth Fellowship Organization. He had also been a member of Nashport-Richvale Grange for over 60 years; a life member of Earnest Walsh Post of the American Legion in Duncan Falls and a life member of Wakatomika Post of the VFW in Frazeysburg. Mr. Prior was known for his ability to memorize and recite poems and he was invited by many organizations to recite and give readings. Mr. Prior retired in 1996 after 43 years of service with the State Highway Department and had also worked at Bonifield Hardware Store and Owens-Corning Fiberglas. He enjoyed farming as he raised sheep and trained and raced harness ponies and was a collector of vintage tractors. Surviving is one brother, Ralph Prior of Nashport and one sister, Alice Prior of Zanesville and many cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther P. (Hanson) Prior, whom he married November 27, 1976 and who died August 15, 1993; a brother, Lee Prior and a sister, Gladys Kendall. Calling hours will be 2 to4pm and 6 to 8pm Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street. Funeral services will be 11:00am Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the funeral home with the Rev. Clarence Dinnen officiating. Burial will be in Irville Cemetery.
