Vernon L. Prouty, 87, of Zanesville, Ohio went to be with his Lord Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018 at Willow Haven Nursing Home in Zanesville.
Born February 2, 1931 in Dresden, Ohio, he was a son of the late Marion and Helen (Snack) Prouty and was a 1949 graduate of Dresden Jefferson High School. Following high school he proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a charter and life member of Dresden VFW Post 11072. Mr. Prouty retired in 1991 from the Newark Air Force Base where he was an electrical technician.
During his early years he was a member of the Dresden First Baptist Church. Later, after his marriage, he became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Zanesville where he was very active in all aspects of the church. He was a member of the National Association of Blood Banks after donating over 22 gallons of blood. Vernon enjoyed music and was a former member of the Y-City Barbershop Chorus. He played guitar and sang in several bands over the years playing for square dances and entertaining at nursing homes throughout Muskingum County. His musical talents earned him the honor of being inducted into the Muskingum County Country Music Hall of Fame.
Surviving is one daughter, Tammy Miller of Texas; two granddaughters and one great grandson. Also surviving are four brothers, Victor (Linda) Prouty of Dresden, Max (Joyce) Prouty of Baltimore, Ohio, Loren (Loretta) Prouty of Zanesville and Larry Prouty of Dresden; a sister Shirley (Francis) Holzschuher and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 60 years, Dorothy L. (Smith) Prouty whom he married April 7, 1957 and who died January 21, 2018; a brother Marion "Junior" Prouty and a sister, Bonnie Whyde Owens.
Calling hours will be 4pm to 7pm Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Friday, February 23, 2018 at the funeral home with Pastor Joe Offenberger officiating. Burial will be in Dresden Cemetery.
