A funeral service for Vernie T. Higley, 90 of Newark will be held Wednesday March 29, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home 1850 West Main Street, Newark with Pastor Tim Sowards officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be observed from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Higley passed away on Sunday March 26, 2023 at the Arthur C. James Cancer Center. She was born March 20, 1933 in Gallipolis, OH to Cecil and Edith (Long) Siders.

She spent many hours caring for her flower garden especially the roses. Completing crossword puzzles was a happy pastime. She was a talented cook and baker. Her most enjoyable time was spent with her grandchildren.

Vernie was one of eleven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Cheryl (James) Cannon, Teresa (Edwin) Leisure, Kathy Higley and Rick all of Newark, Lori (Ora) Stephens of Saint Louisville, Joel (Maretta) Higley of Lynco, W. VA.; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews; special friends, James Pennybaker, Kristy Williams, Michelle Long and Mary Long.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Higley; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey (Tammy) Higley.
