Obituary

A funeral service for Sylvia ?Dee? Philipps McClain, 70 of Newark will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Licking Valley Church of Christ with Gus Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery. Dee passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born August 28, 1937 in Newark to the late Samuel D. and Helen (Hartman) Philipps. Dee graduated in 1956 from Granville High School. She worked at Ohio Power immediately following high school; and did the accounting for the Jerry McClain Company for seven years. Dee was a descendent of the original settlers of the Welsh Hills in Granville and had done extensive genealogical research on the Philipps, Rees and Hartman families. She was a past volunteer at Licking Memorial Hospital; past member and treasurer of the Antique Automobile Club of Central Ohio; a member, past pianist and organist, and past treasurer at Licking Valley Church of Christ. Dee dedicated the majority of her time to following her grandchildren?s school and sporting events. Survivors include her children, Beverly (Doug) Donaldson, Roger (Kathy) McClain, Lori (Mark) Caughenbaugh; Kelly Wilson and her special friend Paul Dague; Penni (Kevin) Carver, and Jarrod (Dawn) McClain, all of Newark; grandchildren, Shanna (Chad) Shumaker, Jamie (Jim) Clouse, Trevor Donaldson and his fianc?e Brooke Johnson, Meghan McClain and her fianc? Tom Fairall, Drew and Matt McClain, Cody, Kady, Kori and Colt Caughenbaugh, MacKenzie and Karoline Wilson, Jake and Carson Carver, Cameron and Tyson Poulton, Reese and Justis McClain, all of Newark; great grandchildren, Zackery, Grant and Regan Shumaker, and Bailee Clouse; her former husband, and the father of her children, Jerry McClain of Newark; sisters, Jennifer (James) Welsh of Granville, and Suzanne Wiget of Newark; a brother, Warren (Cheryl) Philipps of Alpharetta, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Andy Philipps. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 W. Main Street, Newark; and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church, 1578 Dayton Road, NE, Newark. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Madison Township Fire Department, P.O. Box 35, Newark, Ohio 43058-0035; for emergency cardiac equipment. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
