Our Country is in Mourning?.. For a Veteran Died Today?.. FRAZEYSBURG - Russell Leonard Buchanan, 89, formerly of Frazeysburg, Ohio, began a new journey. His work here is done, the circle complete. Surrounded by the family he loved so much, he peacefully went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Primrose Retirement Center of Zanesville. Born September 7, 1920 in Trinway, Ohio, he was the son of the late Leonard and Saloma Brown Buchanan and was a 1939 graduate of Frazeysburg High School. Mr. Buchanan served his country for 34 years, serving with the Navy during World War II and with the Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his active military career Russell worked for 28 years as a Machinist-Tool & Die Maker with the Ohio National Guard Maintenance Unit in Newark, Ohio. Mr. Buchanan was a member of Meadow View Church of Christ in Frazeysburg, Frazeysburg Lodge #490, F. & A. M., Wakatomika Post #6193, VFW, Frazeysburg Revitalization Association and the ?Old Farts Club? a group of retired guardsmen. He loved the game of golf and he played on the Senior Golf League at Vista View golf course and he enjoyed watching tournaments on TV. Russell was a great man, who touched many lives. Many are left to cherish his memory including his two daughters, Judy Merkle and her husband Lavern of Frazeysburg and Cheryl Rogers of Salisbury, North Carolina; his grandchildren Shawn Merkle and his wife Stephanie of South Zanesville, Julie Baker and husband Kenny of Chillicothe, Christopher Hall and Rita Mayer of Jupiter Florida, Heather Hall of Sacramento, California and Matthew McDonald and his wife Melissa of Battle Creek, Michigan. He had sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Rhea Gertrude Dick Buchanan whom he married March 22, 1941 and who died March 5, 1999; his aunt, Anna Kidd; a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Clarence Miller, and a son-in-law Robert Rogers. Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street with Frazeysburg Lodge 490 conducting Masonic services at 8:00pm. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at the funeral home with Minister Sam Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery with Wakatomika Post 6193 conducting military honors.
