"Dick" Thompson
September 26, 1939 – May 27, 2021
Richard E. Thompson, 81 of Newark, OH passed away peacefully Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Sharon Brooke after a lengthy illness. He was born September 26, 1936 in Hanover to the late Earl K. Thompson and Dorothy (Nethers) Thompson Coon.
A graduate of Newark High School, Dick went on to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves for six and a half years. He became a semi truck driver in 1966 and followed that dream until he retired in 2005. He worked for several local companies including B&L Motor Freight and Safety-Kleen.
A loving and loyal husband to his wife, Darla (Fluharty) Thompson, whom he married in 1960; they went on to raise two daughters and a son and then helped raise several grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Windy (Pat) Murphy; a son, Rob (Chanda Ward) Thompson; a sister, Sue (Joe) Himes; two sisters in-law, Fran Tolliver and Doris War; nine grandchildren, Rich Thompson, Brandon (Scarlette) Thompson, Jennifer (Chris) Lee, Kayleigh and Kariann Thompson, Bradley (Jennifer) Hullhorst, Nicholas (Allison) Hullhorst, A.J. (Jesse Lemay) Murphy, Landon (Sydney Johnson) Murphy; nine great grandchildren with three more on the way; and his constant companion, Sassy.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-father, Cary A. Coon; and beloved daughter, Stardis K. Hullhorst.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, Newark, OH 43055. Thank you to all the special friends we have made through Hospice.
Respecting Dick's wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
