FRAZEYSBURG ? Richard C. ?Dick? Mattingly, 84 of West Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Zanesville, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 in Toledo. Born March 3, 1924 in Zanesville, he was the son of the late William Curtis and Anna Marie (Shaffer) Mattingly and was a graduate of St. Thomas High School.He received his Bachelor of Education degree in 1949 from Muskingum College where he excelled in football, track and baseball. He began his teaching and coaching at St. Thomas High School during his senior year at Muskingum. The following year St. Thomas and St. Nicholas consolidated into Bishop Rosecrans High School and he became the Bishop?s first coach. His football team went 8-0 and achieved a No. 5 state ranking in Class A in just the second year. His basketball teams went 79-26 over four years, the football squads 26-11-1. He moved to Toledo St. Francis de Sales High School in 1956 and stayed 32 years as a coach, teacher and athletic director. In Dick?s words, ?It was a great place to teach and coach. I couldn?t have asked for anything better than St. Francis, and we had some great athletes. That?s what made our success.? Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Ginny (Thomas) Mattingly; a sister, Mary Ann (Dick) Mahaffey of Nashport, OH; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Bill Thomas, Stovertown, OH, Larry (Charlotte) Thomas, of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; sisters-in-law, Martha Stemm of Zanesville, and Shirley (Tom) Smith of Lake Wylie, SC and his aunt, Marian Thomas. Local calling hours will be 7 to 9pm Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville. Prayer services will be 11:00am Saturday, March 8, 2008 the St. Mary?s Catholic Church at the Mattingly Settlement, St. Mary?s Road, Nashport with a Dominican Father officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary?s Mattingly Settlement Cemetery. The family was assisted locally by Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home of Frazeysburg.
