A funeral service for Pink Melvin ?Doonie? Matthews, Jr., 76 of Newark will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2008 in the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Rev. Randall Williams officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Military funeral honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. Mr. Matthews died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at his residence. He was born July 20, 1931 in Lansing, Ohio to the late Pink Melvin and Lettie (Reid) Matthews, Sr. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by a son, Anthony (Vel) Matthews of Newark; brothers, Art (Bernice) Matthews of Newark, Herman (Penny) Matthews of Newark, Ronnie Matthews of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Margie (Israel) Robbs of Eden, N.C., Barbara Miller of Newark; two grandchildren, Ashley and Arron Matthews; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Earl Matthews; and daughter, Audrey Matthews. Calling hours will be observed from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 1850 West Main Street, Newark.
