Naomi Jean Wasson, 82, formerly of Frazeysburg, Ohio went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday morning, February 2, 2015 at The Oaks at Northpointe in Zanesville, Ohio.
Born August 5, 1932 in Old Washington, Ohio, a daughter of the late Rev. William and Lelia (Sargent) Power and was the youngest of ten children. Naomi was a 1950 graduate of Frazeysburg High School and she received both her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in education for Ohio University. She retired in 1992 from Tri-Valley School District after 19 years of service. She devoted her career to students with learning disabilities and, in 1986, earned the Teacher of the Year Award. Later she worked for Smeltzer Insurance Agency of Frazeysburg. After her retirement, Naomi re-kindled her love for painting. She painted on canvas, wood, glass, slate and metal and enjoyed showing her work at art exhibits and most recently won "Best Landscape" for the last work she completed.
Naomi was a 50 year member of the Frazeysburg United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities throughout the years. She loved Jesus and served Him gladly by sharing love, compassion, encouragement and a listening ear to those around her. She was a former member and Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, a former Girl Scout leader and was president for the Council of Exceptional Children of Muskingum County. She was the original organizer of the Muskingum County Camp for special children.
Surviving is one son, Eric (Dawn) Wasson of Nashport; two daughters, Sarah (Jerry) Anderson of Beaufort, South Carolina and Stephanie (David) McGrath of Delaware, Ohio; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; a son in-law, Jim Shumaker of Newark; a sister, Lelia Funk of Willard, Ohio; two sisters in-law, Carolyn Power of Columbus, Ohio and Patricia Wasson of Hilton Head, South Carolina; a step brother in-law, John (Connie) Giles of North Fairfield, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Charles "Chuck" Wasson whom she married December 7, 1952 and who died November 17, 2012; two daughters, Susan Wasson and Melissa Shumaker; a son, Bryan Wasson; and a grandson, Jason Anderson. Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Robert, Bashford, Charles and William Power and four sisters, Margarite Alltop, Pauline Chase, Ruth Wegener and Lola Giles.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Friday, February 6, 2015 at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Mesnard and Mr. Phillip Walker officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery.
