Michael David Smith, 69, of Nashport, Ohio died Saturday morning, May 8, 2021 at Genesis Morrison House in Zanesville, Ohio.

Born August 1, 1951 in Zanesville he was a son of the late Leonard Gene Smith and Dorothy E. (Ashcraft) Smith of Frazeysburg, Ohio.  He was a 1969 graduate of Tri-Valley High School and he received his Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources in 1974 from The Ohio State University.  While at Ohio State Michael was a very active Buckeye sports fan.  He served as manager of the Men's basketball team for four years and was the person behind "Brutus Buckeye" for four years.  His enthusiasm for Buckeye sports remained throughout his life and he was a member of the Muskingum County OSU Alumni Club.

Following college Michael joined the United States Navy and served our country for 20 years.  He then became a part of Homeland Security as a part of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command where he served until 2012.  Following his service to our country he returned to the area and worked for his brother, Jeff, at Olde Village Meats in Frazeysburg for several years.  Michael was Presbyterian by faith and he was the president of the annual Smiths At Brush Run family reunion.

Surviving is addition to his mother, Dorothy, is his brother, Jeff (KC) Smith of Frazeysburg; three nephews, Adam Smith, David (Kayela) Smith and Matthew Smith; a niece Ali (Evan) Hodel and a great niece, Kyiah Smith.

Friends may call from 1pm to 2pm Thursday, May 13, 2021 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at approximately 2:30pm Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery, 1475 Military Road, Zanesville, Ohio with Pastor David McCann officiating.
