A memorial celebration of the life of Mary K. Wiechel, 84 of Newark will be held Saturday June 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church 88 N. Fifth Street with Rev. Barbara Sholis officiating. Mrs. Wiechel died Saturday May 31, 2008 at the Flint Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 15, 1924 in Grover Hill, Ohio to the late Harry Burnett and Emma (Tuohy) Kohn. She was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert G. Wiechel, LCDR USN (Ret.), whom she married June 22, 1947; children, Rev. Dr. David R. & Barbara Wiechel of Dayton, OH., Dr. John F. & Patty Wiechel of Worthington, OH., Martha E. & Dr. Jeffry Rothermel of Huntsville, AL., Thomas H. Wiechel of Northern Ky.; daughter-in-law, Sandra K. Wiechel of Bethel, OH.; grandchildren, Benjamin Wiechel, Jeremy Wiechel, Daniel Wiechel, Nathan Wiechel, Matthew Wiechel, Ann Marie Wiechel, Jeremy Anderson, Stacie Brown, Lucas Wiechel; six great-granddaughters; aunt, Margaret (Kohn) Osborn of Sylvania, OH.; very special first cousins, Bonnie Wallace of Van Wert, OH., Jackie Pencil of Temperance, MI.; special cousin by marriage, Norma Adams of Van Wert, OH.; and many other relatives in the Van Wert, Ohio area. Mrs. Wiechel retired in 1982 from the Newark School System, where she taught high school seniors Advanced English, English Literature and American History. During her tenure at Newark Senior High, she developed a curriculum ?The Bible as Literature.? She had also taught at Keller Elementary and had previously taught in the Toledo School System. She received a BS in Education in 1947 from Bowling Green State University with an emphasis in music. She also had certifications in English, Music, History and Psychology. She graduated from Scott High School (Toledo) in 1942. She was a life-long Methodist, a former member of Epworth United Methodist Church (Toledo), and since 1962 a member of First United Methodist Church (Newark), where she served on the Administrative Board and was a member of the Women?s Society and Candlelighters. Together with her husband and William & Eve Koppert, they organized the New Life Mission in the 1960?s, and also served on the Commission on Membership. She was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Mu Sigma Phi. She was also an auxiliary member of the Military Officers Association of America and the Military Officers Club of Central Ohio. She and her husband were members of the Airstream Travel Club and developed and led the 3200 mile Wally Byam Caravan Club International National Caravan ?The National Lewis & Clark Historic Trail? as well as several other regional caravans. Visitation will be observed at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street, on Friday June 6, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Saturday June 7, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. until the memorial service.
