Marjorie A. Schmitt, 89, of Newark, Ohio, died Monday evening, January 22, 2024, at Sharon Brooke Assisting Living in Newark.
Born April 9, 1934, she was a daughter of the late David Vernon and Velva Viola (Victor) Sidle. Marjorie was a former member of the Toboso Nazarene Church and more recently attended the Toboso United Methodist Church. She was secretary for the Toboso Nazarene Church and played piano for both churches for over 70 years. Marjorie also accompanied various quartets and trios, most notably The Sidle Trio. She was an outstanding musician and taught herself to play the standup base fiddle, guitar, accordion, and the fiddle by ear. One of her earliest performances was at Hillbilly Park at a very young age.
Marjorie was a devoted homemaker, amazing cook and canner, who loved gardening. She was known for her homemade pies and noodles. Many of the meals she prepared for her family were completely home grown, including the main course, sides, and desserts. Marjorie loved her family dearly and enjoyed every moment with them.
Surviving are her children, a son Steve (Judy) Schmitt of Newark; a daughter, Sandy (Derek) Helman of Howard, OH; son in-law, David Osborn of Newark; six grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) Schmitt, Michael (Emily) Schmitt, Amanda (Seth) Brehm, Ethan Osborn, Alexa Helman and Cassidy Helman; eight great grandchildren, Ethan, Adam, Isaac, Luke, Joel, Harper, Rhylan, and Addie; sister, Verna (Carl Dean) Smith; brother, Floyd Wayne (Myrna) Sidle; sister in-law, Evelyn Sidle and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold Glenn Schmitt whom she married June 6, 1953 and who died August 24, 2000; daughter, Nancy Osborn who died in 2022; four brothers, Roy, Dale, Chester, and Kenny Sidle and two sisters, Mildred McKenzie and Eleanor Robison.
Friends and family may call Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 4pm to 7pm and one hour prior to services at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil and Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11:00AM at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Jones officiating.
Marjorie will be laid to rest beside her husband, Harold, at Hanover Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio.
