Leon Powell, 87, of Dresden, Ohio died Friday evening, June 2, 2017 in the emergency room of Genesis Hospital in Zanesville. His loving family was at his side.
Born August 30, 1929 in Dresden he was a son of the late Frederick and Mildred (King) Powell and was a 1947 graduate of Dresden Jefferson High School. After high school he attended Meredith Business College of Zanesville and later he join the United States Air Force and served our country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Powell was an accountant for General Electric and for Licking Memorial Hospital for several years. He became and printer and worked for many years at Tom's Print Shop of Zanesville, retiring in 1991. He also operated his own print shop at his home for many years. Leon was a member of the Dresden United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Ruritan's and a former Boy Scout leader. He was an avid reader, and especially enjoyed reading his Bible and he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. After the age of 55 he began running as a hobby and was very proud of the fact that he completed five Columbus Marathons.
Surviving is his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Barbara A. (Wintjen) Powell whom he married June 10, 1952; one son, Chuck (Paula) Powell of Nashport; two daughters, Pam (Larry) Hogue and Patti (Rick) Knicely, both of Adamsville; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Amber) Hogue, Eric (Shannah) Hogue, Alan Hogue, Brianne (Shawn Sheets) Powell, Alison Powell, Dakota (Jessie) Knicely and Morgan (Liz Burch) Knicely; six great grandchildren, Erin and Alex, Megan and Tim, Camryn and Cadyn; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Ronald Powell.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street.
Calling hours will also be for one hour prior to the service, which will be 11:00am Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Dresden Cemetery
