A funeral service for Joyce Kremer Rhodes Westfall, 75 of Newark will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Church Street, Newark with Rev. Charlie Smith officiating. Burial will be in Easton Cemetery, Easton, Pennsylvania.
Joyce died Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at her home. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania January 23, 1935 to Charles and Evelyn Davis Kremer.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and his wife Charles James & Joan Kremer, her first husband Richard L. Rhodes July 28, 1999 their son Barry Davison Rhodes, and her second husband Robert Westfall who passed December 25, 1989.
She married Richard Leiter Rhodes Jr. of Easton, PA. April 27, 1956; they were married twenty six years and are the parents of children, Charles Jeffery (Robin) Rhodes of Charlotte, NC, Nancy Jo (Donald L.) Bergman of Allentown, PA and David Richard (Lisa) Rhodes of Newark, OH. Joyce had seven grandchildren that she was so proud of; William McKinley Saxon, Anna Reverdy Rhodes, Sara Elizabeth Bergman, Seth Joseph Bergman, Trent Jeffery Bergman, Nicholas Joseph Rhodes and Paige Alexandra Pyott Rhodes. She then married Robert D. Westfall and is survived by her companion and close friend of six plus years, Jack McKenzie of Johnstown, Ohio. Joyce is grateful for the love and support of Jack McKenzie and his family
Joyce attended Monmouth College located in Monmouth, NJ and graduated from The Easton Hospital School of Nursing in Easton, PA with a degree in nursing and became a RN. Joyce worked in nursing for 52 years. Locally she worked for; Charles F. Sinsabaugh, M.D., was the first paid Director of Volunteers at Licking Memorial Hospital establishing a Department of 500+ over ten years, she did Home Health Care, and was the Director of Nurses at the LPN Health Care for 10 ½ years, then taught nursing at C-Tec and was an owner of J&D Storage.
She was a committed volunteer, her work included; School Nurse at Cherry Valley for six years, scouting BSA Medical Explorer program, Newark Schools Systems Medical Program, The 1810 House, a Founding Member of Twig 15, past Treasurer of Newark Newcomers Club, served on the Licking County Alcoholism Board as VP of Funding, served on the Spencer Half Way House Board, and worked on the Advisory Committee of JVS. She has been a an active member of Second Presbyterian church since for 50+ years serving the church as; a Deacon, Elder, Treasurer for the Board of Deacons, Historian for the Presbyterian Womenâ??s Group and as head of the Personnel Committee.
Her professional affiliations were; Charter Member of the Ohio Society of Directors of Volunteers through the Ohio Hospital Association, elected Membership and Communication Chairperson for OSDVS, Chairperson for the Central District for Directors of Volunteers, Charter Member Treasurer and past President of Southwest & Central Ohio Director of Nurses Association, member of Long Term Care Association, member of the Ohio and National Director of Nurses Association for Long Term Care.
Calling hours will be observed 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street, Newark.
