Joseph Warren Susil, 76, of Frazeysburg, Ohio died Wednesday night, September 30, 2026. 

Born on March 17, 1950 in Columbus, Ohio to Joseph James Susil and Virginia June Hockley Susil. He was the eldest son out of 6 children.

Joe graduated from Tri-Valley High School in 1968. He was a member of the FFA and 4-H during high school and loved working the family farm in Frazeysburg.

Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in 1970. He was a combat veteran, serving his time as an artillery gunman in Vietnam and Cambodia. He served in B Battery, 1 st Battalion, 27th Artillery on Gun 5. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his dedication to service. He was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, 2 OS Bars, Sharpshooter (M-16), Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/1960 Device, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. During his service he would find a band of brothers, Butch, Dale, Ray and Buddy. He was incredibly blessed to be able to stay in contact with them, spending time hunting and fishing with them and celebrating many reunions together over the years.

He was a farmer and carpenter for many years. He retired from Jackson Township, Frazeysburg as a Road Superintendent after 28 years of service.

Joe married his high school sweetheart Carolyn (Wilcox) Susil on May 20, 1972. Together they raised 5 children. Shawn, Jay, Christa, Peggy, and Elaine. They were married for 38 years until Carolyn passed away on July 3, 2010. They shared 8 grandchildren. Makenna, Ayla, Gracie, Addison, Ezra, Camille, Chase, and Lydia.

Joe retired in February 2014. In his golden years he married Edith Bice Susil on November 17, 2019. Joe & Edie shared nearly 7 joyous years of companionship and love together.

Joe is survived by his wife Edith Bice Susil, of Coshocton, one son, Jay (Katie) Susil, of Norwich; three daughters, Christa (Brian) Hutton, of Frazeysburg, Peggy (Devin) Norman, of Newcomerstown, and Elaine (Richard) Bell, of Frazeysburg; one daughter in-law, Wendy Gammon, of Trinway; eight grandchildren, Makenna Susil, Ayla Norman, Gracie Hutton, Addison Bell, Ezra Norman, Camille Susil, Chase Norman, and Lydia Bell; two sisters, Shirley Ann Sargent, of Grandview, Idaho, Linda Jordan, of Coshocton, Ohio; three brothers, Roger Susil, of Tucson, Arizona, Royce Susil, of Frazeysburg, Ohio, and Keith Susil, of Warsaw, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Carolyn, one son Michael Shawn Gammon who died January 30, 2014, one nephew Curtis Sargent, and several aunts and uncles.

Joe was a member of Saint Ann Catholic Church in Dresden for 60 years, Frazeysburg VFW Post 6193, NRA, Friends of the 500th Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Mountain Top Hunting Club, and Knights of Columbus Council #10820.

Joe was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, farming, camping, and going to Mountain Top, West Virginia where he would camp, hunt, fish, sightsee and ride his 4-wheeler all over the mountain. Mountain Top and the Canaan Valley in WV were his slice of heaven on earth. He will be remembered for his devotion to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his loving family, and his witty sense of humor.

Friends and family may visit 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil | Wagner | Marshall Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.

A funeral mass will take place 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 405 Chestnut Street, Dresden, OH 43821.

Joe will be laid to rest beside his first wife, Carolyn, in Frazeysburg Cemetery.
