Obituary

Funeral services for John Marvin Reed, 80 of Newark will be held Friday 10:00 a.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Major Ronald DeMichaels officiating. Burial will be in Brushy Fork Cemetery with military services provided by Licking County Veterans Alliance. Mr. Reed died Monday May 12, 2008 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center operated by Hospice of Central Ohio. He was born March 11, 1928 in Licking County to the late Charles William and Mamie Catherine (Bradley) Reed. Mr. Reed retired in 1985 after many years as a truck driver. He was a lifetime member of Teamsters Local # 637. He had driven for A & B Cartage and Phil Vogelmeier among other carriers. He had previously operated the Sinclair Station on E. Main St. from 1953-1965. Mr. Reed served in the U. S. Army. He was a member of Newark Lodge # 97 F& AM, Aladdin Temple of Columbus, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He was a retired member of AACA He spent many hours volunteering, during his retirement at the Salvation Army, Croton Fair, Shrine baseball games and tabloid sales for the Shrine. He enjoyed family activities and being outdoors; fishing, camping, gardening, farming and traveling. He devoted many hours to his antique cars. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Ayers) Reed, whom he married May 14, 1949; children, Joan Curry, John (Myra) Reed, David (Kathy) Reed, Kamala Snelling all of Newark; sister, Judy (Gary) Humbert of Newark; grandchildren, Angela (Andy) Fish, Michael (Casey) Curry, Stephanie (George) Schumaker, John Reed, Jr., Josh (Kristi) Reed, Amanda Felumlee, Jessica Atherton, Brian (Brianna) Nethers, Deena Snelling, Kari Snelling; eleven great-grandchildren; special cousin, Kaye Hartman; several special nieces, nephews and his buddy, Skip. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry M. Reed; two brothers, William Reed and Jim Reed. Calling hours will be observed Thursday 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home 1850 West Main Street. Masonic services will be conducted Thursday at 5:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio P.O. Box 430 Newark, Oho 43058-0430. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
