A funeral service for John W. â??Billâ? Martin, 80 of Heath will be held Wednesday April 7, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Pastor Josh Pennington officiating. Burial will be in Newark Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be observed Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home 1850 West Main Street.
Bill died Sunday April 4, 2010 at the Flint Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness. He was born March 14, 1930 in Woodsfield to the late James E. and Janie J. (Kiser) Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Judith (Ridge) Martin; daughters Pam (Phil) McCullough of Hebron, Vicki (John) Wheeler of Zanesville; sons, Robert (Donna) Martin of Heath, Edward Martin of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Tracie Gilligan, Melissa Gilligan, Kevin Gilligan, Sonia (Samuel) Webster, Justin Martin, Karri Martin, Hunter Martin, Hailey Martin, Jason Martin, John Wheeler, Katie (Ryan) McCune; seventeen great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Linda) Martin of Heath; many nieces and nephews.
Following graduation from Newark High School in 1947, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1950. Following the end of his enlistment, he was employed by both McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft in California. In 1957 he decided it was time to return home to Ohio. From 1957-70 he was a supervisor for Licking Laundry and its subsidiary The Athletic Equipment Co. He had previously been employed as a semi-driver for Truck One and B&L Motor Freight from 1970-89. He retired in 2005 from the Ohio Department of Health (WIC Division).
He was a founding member of the Heath Sertoma. An avid bowler, he enjoyed bowling until his health no longer permitted. In addition, he enjoyed golf, traveling and both big band and country music.
