Jean Marie Stokes Oravis, 93 of Zanesville, formerly of Frazeysburg died Saturday morning, June 7, 2014 at Morrison House, Zanesville.
Born February 3, 1921 in Frazeysburg to the late Ivan and Eva (Smith) Stokes. She was a 1939 graduate of Frazeysburg High School and attended Meredith Business College in Zanesville. She worked for Ohio Plastic, was a secretary at Frazeysburg High School, and then moved to Columbus and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. Her office was transferred to Washington, D.C. in 1945 where she worked for several years. After living in Maryland for 34 years, Jean returned to Frazeysburg in 1988 where she resided until moving to Appletree in Dresden. She also recently lived at the Oaks at Northpointe, where she was the first resident in assisted living.
Jean was a Member of Frazeysburg United Methodist Church; the Twentieth Century Club; and the Frazeysburg and Dresden Senior Centers. She was an avid Buckeyes fan and loved playing euchre and bingo with her many cherished friends.
Survivors include her sister, Joanne (Carroll) Bumpus of Frazeysburg; two brothers, Rev. Don (Christine) Stokes of Pittsburg, PA, and Robert (Joyce) Stokes of Ashland, OH; a sister in-law, Audrey Stokes; a brother in-law, Robert Leas; and she was a special Aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul P. Oravis, whom she married, August 18, 1951 and who died November 26, 1987; a son Paul Randy Oravis; infant Oravis; three sisters, twin sister, Janis Riley, Kathryn Frazier and Betty Leas; two brothers, Kenneth Stokes and Ivan Stokes.
Calling hours will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2014 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 Third Street, Frazeysburg.
A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the Frazeysburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Robert Mesnard and Rev. Don R. Stokes officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Frazeysburg United Methodist Church or Genesis Hospice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
