A funeral service for James N. Holmes, 87 of Newark will be held Wednesday August 4, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. in the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Wayt officiating.
Mr. Holmes died Saturday July 31, 2010 at the Inn at Sharon Brooke. He was born December 18, 1922 in Kane, PA. to the late Noah H. and Gussie (Nellis) Holmes.
Mr. Holmes retired in 1980 from Bendix Corporation as a corporate pilot with 30 years of service. Mr. Holmes was a veteran of WWII and served in the Army Air Corp. He became a licensed pilot at age 19. He was a member of Cox United Methodist Church. He enjoyed being outdoor, gardening and bird watching. He spent many hours woodworking and devoted retirement to a second career in photography. He traveled extensively during his retirement in New England photographing nature.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth (Walters) Holmes, whom he married November 8, 1942; children, James A. (Cindy) Holmes and family of Fryeburg, Maine, Linda J. Holmes and family of Newark, Ohio, Wendy Holmes-Smith and family of Washington, Maine; sister Joan Kerr and family of Mt. Jewett, PA.; many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be observed Wednesday 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home 1850 West Main Street.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, Central Ohio Chapter 3380 Tremont Road Columbus, Ohio 43221. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
