Dresden

Jackie Leland Black Sr., age 82, passed away on January 13, 2026. He was born on October 28, 1943, to his late parents, Roy and Dorothy (Caldwell) Black.

Jack was united in marriage to Judith (Vickers) Black on December 30, 1960, sharing more than five decades of marriage until Judy’s passing in 2012. Together, they built a life rooted in family, perseverance, and an unwavering work ethic.

A 1961 graduate of Jefferson High School in Dresden, Jack began his working life as a truck driver before becoming a coal miner with the Peabody Coal Company, where he worked for 33 years. After moving to Jackson, he continued his mining career with Waterloo until his retirement. Jack later settled with Judy in Frazeysburg, where they made their home until her passing. He then moved to Carrollton, where he resided with his son Ned for several years.

Even into his later years, Jack never slowed down. He continued to work tirelessly, running his mini farm until the last month of his life, raising rabbits, chickens, and cows. He was truly one of the hardest-working men many had ever known.

Outside of work, Jack spent many years enjoying the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, and trapping, hobbies that brought him great peace and joy throughout his life.

Jack was a devoted father to Ned Black (Nora), John Black (Jenny), and Kimberly Baker, and to Jackie Leland Black Jr., who preceded him in death. He was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren, a great-grandfather to 31, and a great-great-grandfather to 4.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Judy (2012), his son Jackie Leland Black Jr. (2016), his late parents Roy and Dorothy Black, his brother Doug, his sister Rose, his great-grandson Saxton Baker (2020), and a newborn great-grandchild.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Jack will be cremated, and his remains will be laid to rest with his wife Judy in the Dresden Cemetery, where they will be reunited.

The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Nora, who lovingly cared for “Pap” throughout the final season of his life. Her compassion, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten, and the family is forever grateful.

Jack will be remembered for his unmatched work ethic, love of the land, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives on through the many generations who carry his name, his values, and his strength.
