Herman Wheeler, 84, of Columbus and Gahanna, died Saturday morning May 7, 2011 at Emeritus At Chestnut Hill at Gahanna.
Mr. Wheeler was born January 26, 1927 in Blaine, KY, a son of the late Lon and Emily (Greene) Wheeler. An Army veteran of WWII, he had served as an MP at the Nuremburg war crimes trails. For 46 years, he had worked at Union Fork & Hoe and was a member of the Diamond Club. Mr. Wheeler always enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and golfing, and shot a 'hole-in-one' at the Raymond Golf Course. Always having a knack for the mechanical, later in life he discovered a talent for painting watercolors. Mr. Wheeler had attended the Fifth Avenue U. Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Carol (Chuck) Couch of Reynoldsburg; grandchildren, David (Denise) Barr, John (Nicole) Couch, Christopher Couch; great grandchildren, Alex and Kayla Barr, Leah and Kinley Couch; a brother, Harry (Christine) Wheeler of Plain City; sisters, Lee (Jim) Creech of Waverly, Gladys Dials of Canal Winchester, Maxine (Jesse) Holland and Roberta Wheeler both of AZ, Delores Wheeler of Columbus and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alverna Mae (Tumblin) Wheeler on September 6, 2009; a daughter, Janet Lee Strait; brothers, Leslie, Howard and Fred Wheeler; sisters, Lenore Boggs, Thelma Kazee and Laura Skaggs.
Friends may call 12PM until a 2PM funeral service Tuesday May 10, 2011 at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street. Mr. Wheeler's nephew, Greg Creech will officiate; burial will follow in the Dresden Cemetery.
