IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harriett A.
Applegate
July 25, 1927 – September 21, 2024
Harriett A. Applegate (née Haynes), devoted mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, in Marion, Ohio, at the age of 97. Born on July 25, 1927, in Newark, Ohio, Harriett's early years were profoundly shaped by the Great Depression and World War II, instilling the virtues of thrift, compassion for others in need, and a deep sense of patriotism. Guided by the Christian faith nurtured by her grandfather and her beloved Aunt Mary, Harriett embodied those values throughout her life, serving as a steadfast example of love, generosity, and faithfulness to her family and all who knew her.
Harriett was preceded in death by Glenn, her loving husband of fifty years, and her sister, Freda. She is survived by her four children, Cyndi Lawrence (Bill), Kathy Danner (Ed), Dan Applegate (Dee Dee), and Becky Carle (Mick, deceased), and nephew and niece, Dave Stewart and Beth Dickerson. Harriett was also blessed with eight grandchildren: Britney, Aaron, Jonathan, Ryan, Derek, Sarah, Elise, and Brandon. Her legacy continues through thirteen great-grandchildren: Jake, Caitlyn, Carly, Carson, Brynn, Logan, Hailey, Parker, Avery, Abigail, Hannah, Valerie, and Kaci, as well as a great-great-granddaughter, Peighton.
Harriett's life was centered on homemaking, faith, and family. After Glenn's passing in 1997, she wholeheartedly embraced her role as the family matriarch, fostering the warmth and love of a "homestead" that became the heart of multigenerational family gatherings during holidays and special occasions. During this time, Harriett retained her optimistic and grateful attitude and her infectious laugh. She remained an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, serving on the church council and in various roles within the church community. She also earned a reputation as a tireless, world-class shopper, relishing life's simple pleasures while always keeping her family close.
