A funeral service for Harold Leroy Haynes 93, of Newark will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday November 16, 2007 at the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home with Joe Gilkison and Pastor Bob Long officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Harold passed away early Tuesday morning at the Selma Markowitz Care Center. He was born August 28, 1914 in Newark to the late Stanley D. Haynes and Martha F. (Coffman) Haynes Wivell. A 1934 graduate of Newark High School and a 1938 graduate of Denison University, Harold was awarded many letters in high school and college for football, basketball and track. He was inducted into the Newark High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radar man 2nd class aboard the destroyer USS Newcomb 586. He received several service ribbons for duty in the Pacific Theater, including the invasion of Iwo Jima. Harold retired in 1981 from Owens Corning, where he had worked for 42 years as a research chemist and scientist. He attended Cox United Methodist Church and was a member of the Owens Corning Technical Center Retirees. Survivors include Harold?s wife of 67 years; Bessie Ruth (McNulty) Haynes; elder daughter Mary Ellen (Michael) Osborne of Portsmouth; younger daughter Kathy Harty of Newark; grandchildren, Reynard Lee Osborne of Portsmouth, Shelly Harty (Michael) Bushnell of Houston, Texas; Susan Ellen Osborne of Winchester, Kentucky, Jesse F. (Lori Schneider) Harty of Columbus, and Sarah (Jim) Randolph of Newark; great grandchildren, Avery Ruth, Grayson Elliot and Braden Davis Bushnell of Houston, Texas, Jamye and Ellacyn Randolph of Newark, and Erin Whitmer of Cottage Grove, Oregon; newphews, Walter (Janet) Haynes and Lance Haynes, all of Washington state. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by an infant sister Catherine Haynes; a brother Walter Melvin Haynes; a great aunt, Mary Ellen Coffman Westbrook; and a great uncle, John Westbrook who had raised Harold. Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral service, from 12-1:00 p.m. Friday November 16, 2007 at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street, Newark.
