Obituary

A funeral service for Gary D. â?? Tomato Manâ? Dennis, 68 of Newark will be held Friday April 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Marne United Methodist Church, 1019 Licking Valley Road NE, with Pastor Gus Christo-Baker officiating. Burial will be in Hanover Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Licking County Veteran Alliance.
Mr. Dennis died Tuesday March 30, 2010 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born January 21, 1942 in Hanover, Ohio to the late Orville L. and Clara Frances (Williams) Dennis.
Mr. Dennis retired in 1996 from Rockwell Manufacturing with 30 years service. He was formerly employed by Roper Manufacturing. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force. He was an active member of the Marne United Methodist Church. He had served as the chair of trustees, communion steward, helped with the mowing and the monthly breakfasts. He was a member of New Home Lodge # 338 F & AM. He was active in the Mike Radebaugh Relay for Life and spoke to many school children in the surrounding counties of the dangers of cigarette smoking. He served as the PeeGee Ball Commisioner. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. Visits with his grandsons were a blessing and he looked forward to attending their ballgames. Locally he was known as the tomato man in the Hanover area and people traveled from throughout the region to his tomato stand.
He is survived by his wife Linda K. (Campbell) Dennis whom he married December 12, 1966; children, Stacy (Mike) Vanorski of Surprise, AZ., Chad E. (Kristin) Dennis of Newark; grandsons, Cody H.Dennis and Jacob L. Dennis; sisters, Florence (Lynn) Marmie of Thornville, Carol J. (James) Kirk of Hebron; brothers, Richard O. (Agnes) Dennis of Pataskala, Orville W. (Glenda) Dennis of Newark, Terry L. (Catherine M.) Dennis of Jacksontown; several nieces, nephews and an extended family in Galipolis.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily P. Vanorski.
Calling hours will be observed Thursday 2 to 4 and 6 to8 p.m. at the Newark Chapel of Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral, 1850 West Main St. Masonic services will be held at 5:45 p.m.
The family requests memorial contributions to the Marne United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
