Dr. Gail W. Burrier, MD, 89, of Nashport, Ohio died Sunday afternoon, December 11, 2016 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Born April 6, 1927 in Newark, Ohio he was the son of the late Harold I. and Esther M. (Simpson) Burrier. Dr. Burrier graduated from Fairview High School in 1945 in Dayton, Ohio and joined the United States Navy. He was a Fireman First Class serving on LST 1103 during World War II. Following his service to our county he enrolled at The Ohio State University and graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1956. He practiced family medicine for many years and was the first Director of Family Practice Medicine at Grant Hospital in Columbus. Dr. Burrier was a member of the American Medical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Family Medicine, a life member of the OSU Alumni Association, the OSU Quarterback Club, the American Legion, the Ohio Gun Collectors Association, the Heisey Collectors Association, the Royal Order of Moose, Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society and he was a 2010 Inductee of the Canal Winchester High School Athletic Hall of Fame where he served as team physician from 1956 to 1983. He also served as one of the team physicians for the Columbus Checkers, Seals and Owls, of the old International Hockey League. He attended First United Methodist Church in Newark, he assisted with the Lighthouse Food Pantry at Fellowship Christian Church of Nashport and he enjoyed listening to Big Band and Dixieland Jazz music.
Surviving is one son, Dale (Kimberly) Burrier of Newton Falls, Ohio; one daughter, Mimi Marie (Mike) Abicht of Whipple, Ohio; two grandchildren, Staci Levingston and Trisha Dorsey and one great grandchild, Kiah Bryant.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise (Miller) Burrier whom he married June 12, 1948 and who died January 1, 1982 and a sister, Ruth Evelyn Penick.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Friday, December 16, 2016 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the funeral home with Pastor Faye Harper officiating. Burial will be in Hanover Cemetery. The Licking County Veterans Alliance will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
