Elizabeth Cochran Barns, 99, of Syracuse, New York, formerly of Trinway, died following a brief illness Tuesday January 21, 2003 St. Joseph?s Hospital in Syracuse. Mrs. Barns was born August 19, 1903 in Sabina, Ohio, the daughter of Harry and Alice Marie (Barns) Cohn. She attended public schools in Sabina and Columbus and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1924 with a B.A. degree in education. That same year she began teaching high school English in Trinway, but subsequently interrupted her teaching career for marriage and family responsibilities. During the WWII teacher shortage she returned to teaching in several Muskingum County schools districts including Meigs, Roseville, Adamsville and Dresden, where she retired in 1962. Mrs. Barns was active in many social and community activities during the nearly 70 years that she lived in the Dresden area, including Eastern Star, the Shakespeare Club, Thimble Club, Garden Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dresden. Her first husband, Rolla W. Cochran, died in 1959 and she later married Fred K. Barns, who died in 1990. Surviving are two sons, Rolla W. (Rod) Cochran, Jr., of Syracuse, New York, and Theodore B. Cochran of Albany, New York, six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Friends may call one hour prior to an 11AM funeral service at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home in Dresden Saturday February 1, 2003. Dr. John J.
