A mass of Christian Burial for Donald Charles Swartz, 74 of Elmira, Oregon, formerly of Newark was held June 27, 2007 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Eugene, Oregon with celebrants Msgr. Jack Macfarlane and Fr. Kevin O?Reilly. Burial was in Mt. Calvery Cemetery.Mr. Swartz died June 22, 2007 in Elmira, Oregon. He was born May 21, 1933 in Newark, Ohio. He is survived by children, Kathryn Swartz, Pamela Swartz, Michael (Renee) Swartz, Donna (Al) Vargas, Marla (Tom) O?Driscoll; grandchildren, Joshua Kirkland, Melissa Swartz, Andrew Swartz, Ashley Swartz, Laramie Vargas,Andrew Vargas, Alicia O?Driscoll, Hailee O?Driscoll and Kaitlin O?Driscoll.Mr. Swartz was a 1951 graduate of Newark High School. His senior year, he was first string All Ohio in football. At OSU he was a starting lineman for the 1954 National Championship Team under the leadership of Woody Hayes. He played in the 1955 Rose Bowl and graduated in 1955 from The Ohio State University. In 2000 he was inducted into the Newark High School Hall of Fame. Mr. Swartz moved to Elmira in 1961 to coach football and teach physical education and science. He led the school to 11 winning seasons and he was privileged with the school naming the football stadium in his honor. He completed a 30year career at Fern Ridge School District serving as athletic director, business manager, vice principal and assistant superintendent. He retired in May 1991 the same time that his wife died. Education and sports were high priority in both their lives. Their belief that athletics not only helps to form a well-rounded student, but also supplies children with participatory options that may prevent them making less desirable extra-curricular choices has lent to the desire to establish a fund in their memory. The Fern Ridge School District has established activity fees to participate in sports.
