Obituary

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Darla Kay Thompson. Darla was born June 24, 1942, in East Liverpool, Ohio to the late Loma Opal (Fetty) Fluharty and Hugh "Ted" Fluharty.

Darla was a loving and devoted wife to Richard "Dick" E. Thompson, whom she married in 1960.  Prior to his passing in 2021, Darla took exemplary care of him. She was his everything. Together, Dick and Darla lovingly raised two daughters and a son.

Darla is survived by a daughter, Windy (Pat) Murphy; a son, Rob (Chanda Ward) Thompson; nine grandchildren, Rich (Robyn Caldwell) Thompson, Brandon (Scarlette) Thompson, Jennifer (Chris) Lee, Kayleigh and Kariann Thompson, Bradley (Jennifer) Hullhorst, Nicholas (Allison) Hullhorst, A.J. (Jesse Lemay) Murphy, Landon Murphy; 13 great grandchildren; and her constant companion, Sassy.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Stardis K. Hullhorst; sisters; Doris Ward, Fran Green; and brother, Teddy Fluharty.

Darla's mother passed away when she was at the tender age of 10. Her sister, Fran and husband at the time, took on the responsibility of raising her. She was eternally grateful for this act of selflessness. During this time, she and her nephew, Rick Green bonded and throughout life shared a relationship like siblings.

Darla loved children and was especially fond of spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Darla helped raise many of her grandchildren. She was the person we would all go to for advice. She was the Matriarch of our family. Her strength was unparalleled.
When we were young, our house was the go-to for all the neighborhood children. She doted on all of us, making sure there was always a pitcher of sweet tea in the refrigerator and the latest trending snacks.

While she babysat many children throughout the years, there was always a special place in her heart for Scott Foster and Shelley (Foster) Pfan.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, Newark, OH  43055.

Thank you to the Inn at Chapel Grove for providing the care our mother deserved during her last days.

Respecting Darla's wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral.

Vensil & Chute Funeral Home - Newark Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
