Obituary

Funeral services for Clara May (Sturtz) Hopkins will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Woodside Presbyterian Church, 295 Woods Avenue with Pastor Judy Baker presiding. Interment will be Friday, October 2, 2009 at 4:00 pm at Prospect Church Cemetery in Dresden. Clara, 83 of Newark passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Patsy Gehring, in Madison, Ohio, after a long illness. Clara was born October 11, 1925, in Dresden, Ohio, to John and Clara Zoe (MacFerren) Sturtz. She married Paul Hopkins, September 8, 1944 he preceded her in death, in September 1986. They had 5 children: Jeff Hopkins and Paula Rink, both of Newark; Dr. Patsy (Dr. Gregg) Gehring of Madison, OH; Dr. Jim (Jackie) Hopkins, of Martinez, CA, and Clara Suzanne Hopkins, who is deceased. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, several very dear nieces and nephews, and many friends. She will be remembered by all as a very loving, courageous, adventurous, Christian woman. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by siblings George, Oscar, Edmond, and William MacFerren, Mary Ann (MacFerren) Michelthwaite, Jess Sturtz and Betty (Sturtz) Porter. She was a 60-year member of Woodside Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Mother?s Club, an elder, and served as Clerk of Sessions before her illness. She loved Woodside and all the many dear friends she had there. She retired from State Farm Insurance?s Regional Office in 1990 after 25 years? service. Clara graduated with the class of 1943 from Jefferson High School in Dresden. She was a charter member of Toastmistress, and a regular at the Tuesday and Saturday Euchre tournaments at Zerger Hall for many years. She also enjoyed her many travels to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and across the United States with her sister. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at Woodside Presbyterian Church, 295 Woods Avenue and also one hour prior to the services on Thursday. Flowers will be gratefully accepted, but those who prefer to do so are encouraged to make a donation to Woodside Presbyterian Church in Clara?s memory. Envelopes will be available at the church.
