A funeral service for Charles William Prouty, Sr., 89, of Newark will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at Vensil & Chute Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Cole officiating. Burial will be at Hanover Cemetery. Military Funeral Honors will be provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Charles passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023 at his home. He was born August 11, 1934 in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Clyde William Prouty and Mable Margaret (Long) Prouty.
A 1953 graduate of Hanover-Toboso High School; Charles proudly served in the 1st Marine Division of the United States Marine Corp. He was deployed shortly after Basic Training to Korea for a year and then was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California for 2 years. He also served 2 years in the National Guard.
Charles graduated from Andrew's Barber school and was employed at Midland Barber Shop and Ables Barber Shop. He then worked at Kaiser Aluminum and Woeste Real Estate. He retired from Owen's Corning Fiberglass after 23 years as a Machinist.
He was an outdoorsman and liked hunting, fishing and swimming. Charles enjoyed all sports whether he was a participant or watching others. He coached Little League in all sports for many years. He was a marathon runner until he was 65 years old when diagnosed with a rare form of Pulmonary Fibrosis. Charles was a member of the Toboso United Methodist Church and a former member of Wright Memorial United Methodist Church where he was very active in both.
Charles was a kind, caring, family-oriented man and was happiest surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Rose (Hewitt) Prouty; a daughter, Kimberly (Jim) McWilliams; a son, Charles W. Prouty Jr.; grandchildren, Kyle (Christal Van Lear) McWilliams, Megan (Chanyce) Speakman; great-grandchildren, Madisyn McWilliams, Emma McWilliams, Kate Speakman, and Kurt Speakman; sisters-in-law, Linda Prouty, Vicki Prouty, and Agnes Hewitt; brother-in-law, Loren Hewitt; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Fred Prouty and Homer Prouty; and a sister, Gladys (John) Gale.
Friends and family may call 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 1850 W. Main Street, Newark.
