Carl W. Wilcox, 99, of Frazeysburg, Ohio died Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2014 at Autumn Health Care in Zanesville, Ohio.
Born March 3, 1915 in Rockbridge, Ohio, Hocking County, he was a son of the late Silas and Della (Ankrom) Wilcox. In his younger years Carl worked in the copper mines in Butte, Montana and coal mines of Coshocton County, Ohio where he learned to set dynamite charges, a skill he used later to blow up bridges during World War II. He was very proud of his military service and served in the U. S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Some of his service medal include, EAME Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars; Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, WW2 Occupation Medal (Germany) and the Victory Medal. Carl retired in 1977 from Rockwell International of Heath, where he was an inspector, after 25 years of service. He was a member of Wakatomika Post #6193, VFW of Frazeysburg and the Wakatomika Veterans Club. He attended the Frazeysburg United Methodist Church and served for several years with the Frazeysburg Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving is one son and daughter in-law, John and Margie Wilcox of Dresden, Ohio; a son in-law, Joe Susil of Frazeysburg; six grandchildren, Jason (Georgia) Wilcox, of Frazeysburg, Jay (Katie) Susil of Zanesville, Angela (Mike) Engle of Dresden, Christa (Brian) Hutton of Frazeysburg, Peggy (Devin) Norman of Newcomerstown, Ohio and Elaine (Richard) Bell of Frazeysburg; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a granddaughter in-law, Wendy Gammon of Trinway, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ruth M. (Starner) Wilcox whom he married October 22, 1946 and who died March 20, 2008; a daughter, Carolyn Susil who died July 3, 2010; a grandson, Michael Shawn Gammon who died January 30, 2014 and six brothers, Charles, Robert, Ben, Pearl, Edward and Floyd Wilcox.
Calling hours will be 5pm to 8pm Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street.
Funeral services will be 10:00am Friday, August 8, 2014 at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Mesnard officiating. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery with Wakatomika Post #6193, VFW conducting military honors.
