Obituary

Betty Jean Garrett (Bishop), 87, of Dresden, Ohio, passed on at 10:37 a.m. on October 20, 2012, at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio, and joined her family, husband Raymond Parry Garrett; parents Dorothy Mae (Brock) and Harrison Oscar Bishop; siblings Walter, Dale, Bob, Bernice, Ruth and Isabelle; grandson Conor Ian Garrett-Bell; nieces Deborah and Leona Jones; nephews Donald, Pete and Butch Jones and great nephew Frankie Blackford.
Surviving are daughter Suzanne Garrett-Bell (Theresa); granddaughter Aidyn Rei Garrett-Bell; son Mark Douglas Garrett (Debra); grandchildren Gabi and Dustin McComas; great grandchildren Lydia and Jacob McComas; nieces Laura Mae Blackford (Jones); nephew Richard Jones; great nephews Gregory L, Harold E. and Steven P. Blackford; niece Carol Sue Howard (Lacy); and great nephews, Max, Dean and Troy Howard.
Betty graduated from New Concord High School in 1944 then entered the Cadet Nurse Corps and graduated with her R.N. from Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville in 1947. Betty worked 21 years as a head nurse in geriatrics at Coshocton Memorial Hospital where she was known for her compassionate and caring manner. After retiring in 1989, Betty became involved in fundraising for Lou Gehrig's disease. She also loved Volkswagens and showed that by being a member of the Central Ohio Vintage Volkswagen Club. Betty collected Longaberger baskets and antique glassware. She enjoyed yard sales and loved a good party. She was particularly passionate about Kids 'n Kamp and raised money for the organization and enjoyed participating in Recreation Unlimited. Most importantly, she spent her life in the service of others.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dresden Chapel of Vensil-Chute Funeral Home, 714 Main Street. Funeral services will be 3:00pm Wednesday October 24, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will be Wednesday in the Dresden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for the Betty Jean Garrett Memorial Fund for Kids 'n Kamp, 3440 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
