A funeral service for Alfred Jay Eckhardt, M.D., 67 of Newark will be held Saturday June 18, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Church Street, Newark with Rev. Michael W. Smith officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Welsh Hills Cemetery. Dr. Eckhardt died Monday June 13, 2005 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He was born March 9, 1938 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Alfred Clayton Eckhardt and Rita (Woxman) Eckhardt of Bellefontaine. Dr. Eckhardt retired in December of 2001 from Licking Memorial Health Systems. In 1971 he started his practice with Newark Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Licking County Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1984-1991, Chairman of Credentials Committee from 1984-1989 and served on numerous committees. He was a member of the Newark Rotary, the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club and Second Presbyterian Church. He graduated in 1956 from Bellefontaine High School, 1960 Ohio Wesleyan, 1964 The Ohio State University Medical School. He served his OB/GYN Residency at OSU and an Internship in Detroit. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He served two years in the U. S. Air Force. A devoted husband and father, he enjoyed playing the guitar, reading, gardening, mall walking, roller blading and fishing. He was a former coach at North Newark Little League and had sponsored a team for many years. He also tutored at Newton Elementary in the Rotary Read with Me program. Survivors include his mother; loving wife, Cheryl (Wood) Eckhardt, whom he married March 18, 1996; sons and daughter-in-laws, Drs. Aric Jay and Tina Eckhardt of Milan, Ill., Aaron Jay and Jamie Eckhardt of Tampa, FL., Drs. Jonathan Jay and Laura Eckhardt of Bryan, Ohio; daughter, Mindi Jayne Campbell of Newark; step-sons, Andrew Scott Wood of Columbus, Aaron Stephen Wood of Newark; sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Tim Tillman of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Brandon, Giavanna, Sierra, Keira, Maxwell, Tanner; a niece and nephew. Calling hours will be observed Friday 6 to 9 p.m. at the Vensil-Orr & Chute Funeral Home, 1850 West Main Street, Newark. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Newark Little League or a favorite charity. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
